Executive Onboarding expert George Bradt shares his unique perspective regarding transformational leadership on TotalPicture Radio.

STAMFORD, Conn., April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Did you know that 40% of new leaders fail within the first 18 months? In a recent interview, George Bradt, Principal of CEO Connection, managing director of PrimeGenesis, and best selling author, discussed his new book, First-Time Leader - Foundational Tools for Inspiring and Enabling Your New Team, with TotalPicture Radio's producer/host, Peter Clayton.

First-Time Leader was inspired by co-author and UK based entrepreneur, Gillian Davis. Thrust into a new leader role with short notice, she found herself with no plan, and no clue where or what to start. Davis (a successful recruiter, who grew up in a family owned executive search business) wanted to adopt the tools in Bradt's executive onboarding book, The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan -- for first-time leaders such as herself. His response, "Why don't you and I write a whole new book and look at it from afresh?" She enthusiastically agreed. The result is a unique mix of seasoned global senior executive and new generation millennial living a leader's responsibilities for the first time. They both believe a first leadership role is a career-defining moment. "Inspiring and enabling others is all about relationships," said Bradt. "This is probably the biggest shift for a first-time leader. At least it was for Gillian. Shifting from executing the work to delegating the work was one of her biggest challenges."

"Isn't there such a thing, George, as a natural born leader?" Clayton asked. "People will follow a charismatic leader for a time, but it's all about the leader." Bradt responded, "They will commit themselves to the cause of a BRAVE leader over time." BRAVE, a key concept described in the book, is an acronym for behaviors, relationships, attitude, values, and environment.

On the topic of relationships, there is a surprising amount of actionable information, resources, and downloadable templates regarding talent acquisition, the hiring process, workforce management, employee engagement and retention. TotalPicture Radio has a focus on the staffing industry and HR technology. One tool, "The Recruiting Brief" takes a very different approach from the recruiting tools Clayton is accustomed to seeing. Bradt responded, "I think a lot of recruiters go at this wrong and if leadership is about inspiring and enabling others, which it is, and if onboarding is a crucible of leadership, which it is, the way you bring people in is critical."
