DENVER, May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- May is Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month! Coloradans throughout the state are celebrating their historic built environments, archaeological relics and local history. This year's theme is Heritage at Work, in part to recognize the 100th anniversary of the harrowing Ludlow Massacre, one of the most significant events in Colorado history.

Colorado's Archaeology & Historic Preservation month theme is Heritage at Work, in part to recognize the 100th anniversary of the harrowing Ludlow Massacre, one of the most significant events in Colorado history.

On April 20, 1914, a makeshift tent colony near Trinidad was ravaged by gunshots and fire when the Colorado National Guard attacked striking coal miners and their families at the Ludlow tent colony. That tragedy exposed the abhorrent working conditions facing miners, and other laborers, around Colorado and the nation at the beginning of the 20th century, and its aftermath changed forever how Coloradans work.

From farmers and miners to railroaders and Rosie the Riveter, Coloradans have always been hard workers, eager and willing to build a state that's now on the forefront of engineering, agriculture, transportation, manufacturing, aerospace, health, energy and entrepreneurship.

Whether you're from Durango or Denver, your community-and your own two hands!-have shaped Colorado's working past and future. Join us to honor our legacy of labor, and attend events across the state that share stories about Colorado's Heritage at Work.
