Book launch party and reception, May 3; "Remembering Zyg," a presentation by Zyg's friends, colleagues, and students, May 10; Live Art Series performance, May 24
GLOUCESTER, Mass., May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Trident Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of exceptional and historically important oil and watercolor paintings from the estate of Zygmund Jankowski (1925-2009). Jankowski was a dedicated and innovative painter, a colorful and generous personality, and a loved and respected teacher on Cape Ann from the 1970s till his death in 2009. His paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and he is one of the most important artists of his time in the Cape Ann tradition, influential both as a painter and as the colleague and teacher of a generation of artists.
The exhibition coincides with the release on May 3 of a book on the artist, 96 pages of the artist's images and words together with commentary by friends, colleagues, and students, some of whom will present "Remembering Zyg" in the gallery on May 10.
During his career, Jankowski explored a variety of styles. In the mature work shown in this exhibition, he is best described as a colorist and expressionist who painted traditional subjects with exuberant irreverence for traditional rules of color, composition, and perspective. With tireless commitment to his art, Jankowski expressed his playfulness and wit, his generosity of spirit, and his exuberance for life in the vivid and unexpected colors and compositions of his paintings.
The carefully selected paintings in the Trident Gallery exhibition are among the pinnacle achievements of Jankowski's thoughtfully spontaneous process. A room of 16 paintings from his rarely shown series of erotica furthermore fully reveals to collectors for the first time a body of work representing an important dimension of the artist's process and his artistic legacy.
