Proposed New Public Trail System Connecting Atlantic Ocean to Intracoastal Waterway, Marina Village and Beautification of Highway 17 Bypass Highlight Concepts for Community

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from LStar met with Myrtle Beach officials today, in a joint meeting of the City Council and Planning Commission, to discuss the results of a comprehensive six month planning process that explored preliminary design and development objectives for Grande Dunes. After purchasing the 2,200 acre property in December, representatives from LStar expressed a commitment to undertake a thoughtful planning process that would include a close collaboration with City officials, prior to exploring any prospective commercial or residential development within the community. Today's meeting signaled the beginning of that collaboration. LStar expressed an earnest commitment to work closely with City, County and State representatives to help shape a visionary future for this outstanding oceanfront property.

LStar's initial concepts include a 21-mile network of trails and parks that would connect Grande Dunes to the extensive East Coast Greenway trail system. This proposed pedestrian and bicycle park system would provide a contiguous network of trails that connect all of the undeveloped land within Grande Dunes to the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Grande Dunes possesses many miles of undeveloped frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway, and this area was singled out as a crucial component of LStar's long range plans. The firm outlined a plan to preserve this water frontage as open space to create a 3.2-mile linear public park. The community also owns undeveloped land fronting on numerous natural ponds as well as one of the last undeveloped sites on the Atlantic Ocean. Grande Dunes' contiguous landholdings make it possible to link these extraordinary natural amenities to each other as well as other key activity areas. Focal points along the trail network would include the existing marina, the YMCA and dog park, new parks, as well as many miles of waterfront trails that would be open to the public.

LStar also expressed a desire to work closely with City, County and State officials to investigate an extensive beautification project along the 3 miles of frontage that Grande Dunes' possesses on Highway 17 and the 17 bypass. A key component of the visual enhancement program is the creation of pedestrian crossing points along these two major traffic ways. LStar is committed to working collaboratively with local officials to explore different methods of creating safe pedestrian crossing points so the new trail network can safely link all of the landholdings.

LStar's conceptual plans included artists' rendering of a vision for Grande Dunes Marina Village. The firm presented a grand vision for the existing marina and jetty situated along the Intracoastal Waterway. Preliminary ideas for the Marina Village, which could be accessed by car, or through the proposed trail network, could include a waterfront park that could act as a venue for public events and performances. The Marina Village concept envisions the creation of waterfront restaurants, hotels, extensive retail development as well as residential neighborhoods with trails linking all the elements to the park system.
